SPWA Water Treatment Plant Update

September 25, 2015

The 11,000 SF addition and total renovation to the Southwestern Pennsylvania Water Authority Water Treatment Plant has reached substantial completion.  A punch list has been issued and the Contractor is in the process of buttoning up the finishing touches.   In addition, the Department of Environmental Protection has recently authorized the plant to begin supplementing their regular production of water with their expanded and updated filtration system.  This is exciting news for Greene County given that the improvements to the prior system will yield a significant increase in production – moving from approximately 7 million gallons per day to 14 million gallons per day.  The high demand for water in this area has been largely due to increased fracking in the southeastern Pennsylvania region.  In addition to providing water to the fracking industry, the authority will be expanding its service area to other municipalities in need.
